Following the 2025 NRMP Main Match Day, Germane Solutions was thrilled to see newly matched residents secure positions across a range of residency specialties nationwide. This year, the Match saw a 5.3% increase in certified applicants compared to 2024, along with a 4.2% rise in the total number of positions offered. In response to the ongoing changes in the healthcare landscape and the persistent shortage of primary care physicians, the 2025 NRMP had a record-breaking year for program participation and introduced two new specialties: Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
Germane Solutions remains dedicated to supporting our clients throughout every stage of the program planning, application, and interview/MATCH processes. Our goal is to assist clients in achieving institutional and program accreditation while facilitating successful recruitment and interview seasons. Germane Solutions is proud to play a role in addressing the physician shortage across the nation. Germane Solutions played a key role in the creation of 114 new positions out of the 1,547 new PGY-1 positions, with 51 of those positions focused on primary care, in the 2025 Match.
As the demand for Primary Care Physicians continues to grow, the Match saw an increase of 877 positions offered in Primary Care, with a fill rate of around 93.5%. While there was a slight decline in Pediatrics in the 2024 Match, this year saw an increase of 54 positions. Unfortunately, Family Medicine saw a decline in its fill rate, with only 85% of positions filled, primarily due to the addition of 144 new positions compared to last year.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Emergency Medicine historically filled at 98% or 99%, but in 2023, it saw a significant dip to 81.8%. This year, however, there was a renewed interest in Emergency Medicine, with an increase of 42 positions from 2024 and a fill rate of 97.9%, marking the highest fill rate in several years.
Despite the changing political climate, Obstetrics and Gynecology remains a popular specialty among applicants. Of the 1,604 positions offered, only one categorical position and nine preliminary PGY-1 positions went unfilled.
Overall, there was an increase in the percentage of positions filled for U.S. DO and U.S. MD seniors across several specialties. Additionally, the number of non-U.S. citizen IMGs in primary care also grew. Over the past five years, there has been an increase in the number of positions offered in specialties such as Anesthesiology, Child Neurology, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Interventional Radiology, Neurological Surgery, Neurology, Osteo Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine, Otolaryngology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Radiology-Diagnostic, Surgery, Transitional Year, and Vascular Surgery.
